Designed for beginners, this intensive two-day hands-on course introduces the fundamental skills of ultramicrotomy for transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Through expert instruction and extensive laboratory practice, participants will learn how to trim resin-embedded specimens, use glass or diamond knives, operate an ultramicrotome, and collect ultrathin sections for TEM analysis. The course emphasizes practical techniques and best practices, providing participants with the confidence and skills needed to produce high-quality ultrathin sections for biological electron microscopy.

The workshop exceeded my expectations. The hands-on training in electron microscopy was both enlightening and inspiring, and I am confident that the knowledge and practical skills I acquired will have a lasting impact on my research career. This experience has further strengthened my enthusiasm for incorporating EM techniques into my neuroscience research.

The inaugural EM Academy workshop was one of the most useful professional development experiences I have had as a faculty member, and the care you put into it; from the lecture sequence, to the hands-on sessions, to the visit to the JHU Beckman Cryo-EM Facility; was evident at every step.
